Hair, though contributes no vital function to the human body, plays an extremely significant role in our life. Hair loss problem when become severe will certainly affect the lives of the afflicted.  Comparison between 2 persons of the same race, sex, age and physique with same apparel, the person with a normal amount of hair will undoubtedly be rated younger and better-looking, virile and active. Whilst the person with a balding head or thinning hair will be rated as older-looking, dull, weak and uninteresting.  Surveys also revealed that there is a tendency of social discrimination based on a person's appearance.

KNOWLEDGE OF OUR HAIR
Hair is all composed of a substance called Keratin. The average adult human being has about 100,00 to 150,000 hairs on the scalp with type, colour and sizes varies from person to person.

Hair is grown from the root, which is underneath
the skin and embedded in a bag-like structure
called Follicle. Tiny blood capillaries convey the
necessary nutrients to the base of the Follicle
called Papilla where the manufacture of hair takes
place. Adjacent and attached to the follicle is the
Sebaceous gland that secretes an oily substance
called Sebum, which is for the lubrication and
protection of the skin and hair. The duration of
each hair cycle of an individual differs largely with
age, mental stress level, blood circulation and
nourishment and other pathological factors. The active growth period called Anagen phase of the hair cycle may last up to 5 years and the average hair growth is about 12mm in length per month. Hair grows and is shed at a normal rate of 50 to 100 hairs daily.

Male pattern baldness also known as Androgenetic Alopecia and female pattern baldness accounts for about 95% of all cases of hair loss and is attributed to multiple genetic factors and hormonal changes.  Another well known cause is medication but generally, this is only temporary. The abnormal rate of hair loss maybe accelerated by aging, psychological stress, pathological and physiological factors. Many scientific studies have shown that the main cause of excessive hair loss with men and surprisingly with women, is the over-abundant presence of a hormone byproduct called Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the hair Follicle and in the Sebum (scalp oil).

DHT is extremely harmful to the hair follicle, which causes it to produce weaker and thinner hair with a shorter life cycle. If untreated, the follicle will gradually shrink and may die - creating permanent baldness.  With storten life cycles, hair will be dropping off faster and in larger quantity than normal. Eventually, with diminished size and volume, the remaining hair on the scalp will appear scanty, thin and weak and may gradually lead to complete baldness.
